Heritage Open Day at Thornbury Town Hall

Step back in time and discover the hidden stories behind one of Thornbury’s most prominent buildings: Thornbury Town Hall.

From the recently introduced council chamber to the old prison cells, every corner of the Town Hall tells a story. It started life as a grand mansion, became a tavern, was transformed into a magistrate’s court and later became a police station. It is now the premises of Thornbury Town Council.
As part of the National Heritage Open Days event, we will provide tours offering an insight into Thornbury Town Hall’s rich and varied history, revealing its changing roles over the years and the stories of people who once walked its halls.
In celebration of this year’s Heritage Open Day theme ‘Architecture’ you’ll also have the chance to view rare drawings and illustrations showing how the Town Hall has evolved over time. From its earliest incarnations to the present day, see how the structure has grown and adapted, while still preserving its historic charm.
Whether you're passionate about history, fascinated by architecture, or simply curious about the building, this is an opportunity to step inside and learn more about the building’s fascinating past. No need to book – just come along and enjoy a free tour of the Town Hall on Saturday 13th September between 10am and 2pm.
